Nice to Wheat You: Minecraft mash-up story recap
Nice to Wheat You: Retold
A cozy Minecraft mash-up returns with a wintry tale. In the second monthly Minecraft Mash-Up, three in-game elements are woven into a campfire-style story. See if you can spot them—and name the updates they came from.
A snowy stumble back to an old build
On a snowy afternoon, a player named Ray wandered back to an old build almost by accident. They were really searching for open water to try a new find: a dried ghast block. Lost in a blizzard, Ray spotted the oxidized copper roof of a long-abandoned cabin and headed that way.
Signs, warnings—and no wheat
Past Ray had left helpful reminders. Two signs hung by a copper chest: “Welcome back, Ray!” and “Don’t touch the lava chest.” Ray remembered the warning only long enough to ignore it. The chest held nothing fiery—just a scolding book for Future Ray. Inside the cabin, a single sign set the agenda: “You’re out of material! Get more!” So Ray looted what was left: piles of signs, some string, and a bit of wool. No wheat.
Yarn, the woolly wanderer
Back outside, the world was white and flat. Ray spun, picked a direction, and trudged off—straight into a magnificent, shaggy cow with forward-facing horns and thick, warm wool. Perfect for the cold. Ray immediately named the beauty Yarn. There was only one problem: no wheat to tame it. All Ray had were signs and that dried ghast block.
Promises over plants
Time to improvise. Ray planted sign after sign promising “free wheat,” building a corridor of persuasion on either side of the cow. At first, Yarn ignored the bait. Then, slowly, the cow began to follow the breadcrumb trail of promises.
Edge of the ice, edge of night
SPLASH. Ray stepped into ice-cold water—an ocean glowing orange in the sunset. Finally, a place to test the dried ghast block. It went into the water… and nothing happened at first. Night fell fast. A creeper hissed in the distance. With no real weapons, Ray packed snowballs and braced for a desperate defense.
A hint from Yarn—and a ghastling appears
Yarn nudged a sign aside, opening a gap in Ray’s makeshift barricade, then pressed its nose toward Ray as if to say: look. Floating in the water was a tiny ghastling, bobbing near Ray’s spilled items. Zombies groaned closer. Yarn kept mooing, flicking its gaze between the snowballs in Ray’s hands and the newborn ghast.
The hint landed. Snowballs weren’t just ammo—they were ghastling food. Ray rapid-fired snacks instead of shots, feeding the little ghostly mob until it grew larger and happier with every toss.
Lift-off over a white world
At first light, Ray clipped a lead and secured Yarn to their buoyant new friend. Up they went—the cow, the player, and the cheerful ghast—gliding above endless snow. Yarn’s horns angled toward a green patch below. Not a creeper after all—the oxidized roof of Ray’s winter cabin. Home.
Home, wheat home
A few days later, the cabin was cozy again. Ray woke in their own bed, stepped out to find Yarn content in a pen munching actual wheat, and tossed a celebratory snowball to the friendly ghast. On the path, a final sign summed it up: “Home, wheat home.”
